Dr. Charles F. “Chuck” Morton, DDS, 89, of Chelsea, formerly of Union City, passed away Friday, May 24, 2024 at St Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti.
In keeping with Chuck’s wishes, he has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2024 at the First Congregational UCC, 410 North Broadway Street, Union City, MI 49094. Pastor Don Mason will officiate.
A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. Private interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Ann Arbor at a later date.
Memorial visitation time will be held for two hours prior to the service, beginning at 12:00 p.m., also at the church.
Chuck was born on October 16, 1934 in Ann Arbor, Michigan to Hudson T. and Ethelyn Servis Morton. He attended Ann Arbor High School and graduated in 1952. He married Susan Jane Fricker on April 24, 1955 in Ann Arbor.
Chuck was enrolled at the University of Michigan and earned his B.S. in 1957. He continued on with his education and earned his MBA in 1958. Several years later, while having young children at home, he decided to become a dentist. He graduated again from the University of Michigan with his DDS degree in 1969. He practiced for three years in Ann Arbor, then the family moved to Union City in 1972 and established his Union City practice.
The couple raised their five children in Ann Arbor and Union City. Chuck sold his practice and retired in 2004, after 35 years of service.
Dr. Morton was a beloved part of the Union City community and will never be forgotten. He served many from childhood into adulthood and then cared for their children as well.
Chuck was very involved in his community. He served as a Boy Scout leader, was a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Union City, the Coldwater Country Club, the University of Michigan M Club, and was a life member of the American Dental Association. He attended the First Congregational UCC in Union City.
Chuck gave of his time and talent generously to these organizations for many years. He was always part of the maple syrup team for Rotary and was a staunch supporter of U of M football, attending most home games at the Big House. He was an avid track fan and enjoyed high school, collegiate, and Olympic track. He enjoyed telling his own collegiate track stories.
He was also known for his love of horses and trail riding. He had an infectious, friendly smile that could light up a room.
After 49 happy years in Union City, Chuck and Sue moved in September 2021 to Chelsea Retirement Community, Chelsea, Michigan, near the family lake cottage on Half Moon Lake.
In addition to his wife of 69 years, Sue, he is survived by his children David H. Morton of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Daniel J. (Deborah) Morton of Buffalo Grove, Illinois, William H. (Ruth) Morton of Bloomington, Indiana, and Wendy (Shannon) Kratzer of Austin, Texas, daughter-in-law Cindy Morton of Thornton, CO; his eleven grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, his brother “Huddy” Hudson Morton, III, his sister Martha Burton, and his son, Douglas C. Morton.
