Matthew Dean “Matt” Cox, 60, of Union City, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, May 25, 2024 at Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo.
In keeping with Matt’s wishes, he will be cremated and a celebration of his life will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, June 2, 2024 at Lighthouse Funeral & Cremation, 1276 Tate Trail, Union City, MI 49094.
Memorial visiting hours will be held just before the service, beginning at 2:00 p.m.., also at the Lighthouse Sunday.
Matt was born on January 21, 1964 in Coldwater, Michigan to Wallace “Wally” H. and Beverly (Chenoweth) Cox. He was raised in Coldwater and graduated from Coldwater High School in 1982. He was previously married to Denise (Laurell) Bowerman. They had one son together before they divorced. She survives.
July 31, 1998, Matt married Valerie K. Dirschell in Jackson, Michigan.
Always hardworking, Matt was self-employed as a truck driver for many years. He retired in 2012. He enjoyed auctions and worked with Brian Hasty Auctioneers over the last ten years, and worked alongside his wife, Valerie, operating Hometown Treasured Estate Sales together over the past six years.
Matt was mechanically inclined and could fix anything. He was a jack of all trades, who loved to talk, enjoyed laughter, and showed his love by helping others.
He would drop what he was doing to help anyone at any time. He just couldn’t tell anyone no. His family will be forever grateful for all the times he came to their rescue and his helpfulness and generosity will never be forgotten.
In addition to his wife of nearly 26 years, Valerie Cox, Matt is survived by his son, Ryan (Nicole) Cox of Quincy; his mother Beverly Cox of Coldwater; his stepchildren, Jeremy (Kasey) Jastremski of Clinton, North Carolina, Stefanie Loveberry of Austin, Texas, and Trenton Loveberry of Jackson; his brother Douglas (Tamara) Cox of Coldwater; his grandchildren, Cayden and Landon Curtis, Leonard, Wyatt, Annabelle, and Jackson Jastremski, Trevor and Luke Loveberry; and his special friends, Ted and Michelle Goshorn of Sherwood and Tim and Sharon Atkinson of Quincy.
He was preceded in death by his father, his grandparents, and several aunts and uncles.
