COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Sheriff’s Department is scheduled to ask the Board of Commissioners during their work session on Thursday to approve the hiring of a part-timer on an as needed basis to conduct background investigations.
Sheriff John Pollack said in his request to the Commissioners that the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards, otherwise known as MCOLES, is now requiring background checks for all agencies which involves over 40 steps.
Several of the steps are considered to be in-depth.
Pollack says the Sheriff’s Office presently has five background checks that have to be completed under this requirement which involve two prior hires and three new night patrol cadets who just graduated.
He adds since they will not use overtime to complete these investigations, it would mean working them into their daily workload. The department would like to hire a currently working certified officer on a part-time basis who has conducted similar background investigations for a former employer.
Commissioners will be asked on Thursday to bring the request forward for formal action next week.
