UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Union City School Board of Education approved the hiring of Michael Bates as the new Elementary School Principal on Monday night.
The appointment is effective as of July 1, 2024.
Bates is currently is employed as Dean of Students for Dunlap Elementary in the Pennfield School District.
Union City High School teacher Scott Cayo spoke in favor of Bates’ hiring.
Union City Superintendent Chris Katz said in a letter to the Board that Bates’ references from that employer were excellent.
A committee of 14 individuals including Katz were involved in the hiring process at one point or another.
Katz said there were many outstanding candidates but the committee was unanimous in stating their support of Bates as the new building principal.
Bates will take over for Jennifer Johnson. After serving as the Union City Elementary School Principal for five years, Johnson accepted a position with the Calhoun Intermediate School District as a Multi-Tiered System of Supports consultant.
In other business, the board approved a request to eliminate the position of Director of Behavior Supports and lay off James Owens who had held the position since February of 2020. They also approved the creation of a Mental Health Services Specialist position.
