Should all schools stop students from carrying cell phones in the classroom?
Starting with the 2024-2025 school year, students in Sturgis Public Schools will not be allowed to have the cell phones on them during class. They can be kept in their lockers, but not in their pockets or in their backpack during class.
Sturgis Superintendent Dr. Art Ebert says research shows that students are best served when they are in class to focus on school work and not be distracted by their phones and that he has been overwhelmed by the number of messages and e-mails he has received from the community about how this is the right thing to do.
California is considering a new cell phone ban. Governor Newsom says he supports a bill that requires districts limit or just not allow phones during class. If approved, the law would begin in two years.
This comes as the largest district in the state moves in the same direction. Los Angeles Unified voted yesterday to ban cell phone and social media use for more than 429,000 K-through-12 students.
The argument from some parents is they want to have the option to reach out to their child during the day, and that if an emergency happens at the school that want their child to be able to reach out. Are those valid arguments?
