COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A ten-year-old Coldwater girl is in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo after she was rescued from Messenger Lake at the public beach on Saturday afternoon.
Life Care Ambulance and the Coldwater Fire Department were dispatched on a report of a drowning at about 1:20 p.m.. The Branch County Sheriff’s Department was called in a few minutes later.
The Branch County Dive Team was also dispatched but they were later waved off.
The Sheriff’s Department said in a news release issued on Monday morning that initial reports indicated the youngster went missing in Messenger Lake just offshore at Memorial Park.
A witness located her about 70 feet from shore, tangled in the weeds.
The witness then pulled the girl up to shore where CPR was administered by Sheriff’s Deputies for several minutes.
Life-Care Ambulance, Coldwater Fire Mutual First Responders as well as Sheriff’s Deputies continued to administer life saving measures.
The unidentified girl was taken to ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital before being transferred to Bronson Methodist Hospital.
Deputies were assisted at the scene by Life-Care Ambulance, Coldwater Fire Department, the Branch County Marine Patrol and the Branch County Victim Services Unit.
The incident remains under investigation.
The public beach was shut down Saturday due to the Sheriff’s Department investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family with medical expenses in hopes of raising $20,000.
