COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council Monday passed two ordinances which would establish a single hauler and establish rates for residential refuse collection and disposal. One ordinance would raise the monthly rate for residential pickup by one dollar to $13. It would be $11.75 for seniors.
City Manager Keith Baker says the city refuse fund has been operating at a loss for the past two years and there has been no change to the monthly fee for 20 years. Republic Services of West Michigan has been collecting garbage for the city since 2012.
The other ordinance would ban gas fired incinerators as a permitted method of refuse disposal.
The City Council also approved a draft agreement to finance the new aerial ladder truck for the fire department. Delivery is scheduled for early August on the $1.2 million truck, which is being purchased from Seagrave Fire Apparatus of Wisconsin. The agreement calls for the city to make annual payments on the truck for ten years.
Baker says Southern Michigan Bank and Trust has offered to finance the vehicle at an annual interest rate of 2.37 percent.
