CENTREVILLE, MI (WTVB) – While three Republican candidates are running for Branch County Sheriff, there’s a crowded G.O.P. field in neighboring St. Joseph County to replace outgoing Sheriff Mark Lillywhite.
Current Undersheriff Jason Bingaman and his cousin Joe Bingaman, along with Dennis Allen, Gordon Evilsizor, and Chad Spence are all running in next Tuesday’s Primary.
All are registered as Republicans and there are no registered Democrats or other party candidates to challenge the winner of the Republican primary in the November election.
Lillywhite was elected to a four-year term as Sheriff in 2020, but is not seeking reelection. He pled guilty to drunk driving after a crash in Kalamazoo County last year.
The St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners voted in August 2023 to ask Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to remove Lillywhite from office, but her office has not announced any action related to Lillywhite.
