LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Figures released on Thursday by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget showed Branch County’s unemployment rate went up in July for the third straight month.
Branch County’s July unemployment rate was five-point-one percent after it was at four-point-four percent in June and at three-point-eight percent in May.
Branch County now has the 17th lowest unemployment rate among Michigan’s 83 counties.
The report stated not seasonally adjusted jobless rates rose in 16 of the 17 Michigan labor market areas over the month.
Michigan Center for Data and Analytics Labor Market Information Director Wayne Rourke says the unemployment rate increases throughout Michigan were typical for the month of July.
According to Rourke, “Regular annual payroll reductions in education and the state’s auto industry contributed to over-the-month jobless rate hikes.”
While unemployment rates went up, the report showed labor force levels increased in 16 Michigan regions over the month.
Unemployment rates went up to over six percent last month in neighboring counties. St. Joseph and Calhoun Counties had jobless rates of 6-point-3 percent while the unemployment rate in Hillsdale County was 6-point-2 percent.
Michigan’s July unemployment rate went up to 4-point-4 percent after being at 4-point-one percent in June and 3-point-9 percent in May.
Unemployment rates in July ranged from 3-point-7 percent in Mackinaw County to 8-point-3 percent in Oscoda County.
