BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Chargers announced their 2024 presence with authority on Thursday night as they scored a 27-0 shutout at Centreville.
The Chargers led 7-0 at halftime on Eli Payne’s one yard touchdown.
Union City used special teams to break the game open in the second half as a blocked punt led to a seven yard touchdown by Dylon McDonald.
Payne’s seven yard touchdown pass to Rick Austin and McDonald’s second TD of the game from nine yards out rounded out the scoring.
Meanwhile, it was a rough opening night for the Quincy Orioles and the Tekonsha Indians.
The Orioles lost at Kalamazoo Loy Norrix 51-8.
Offensively for Quincy, Ryan Kempter racked up 122 receiving yards on six catches, including a touchdown pass from Alex Barry. Defensively, Carter Pish led the way with six tackles and a sack, while Noah Rufenacht added four tackles to the defensive efforts.
Tekonsha lost to Bellevue in eight person football 57-0.
Bronson wraps up the week one Branch County football schedule on Friday night at Prairie Heights. The Panthers won the J.V. game over the Vikings on Thursday night 20-0.
