BATAVIA TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – The discovery of a sinkhole on West Colon Road near Wheeler Road led to a shut down of a portion of M-86 west of Coldwater on Tuesday.

After the sinkhole was discovered, M-86 between U.S. 12 and Wheeler Road was closed to traffic at about 11:45 a.m. until further notice by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
“Road Closed” signs were put on a nearly two mile stretch of West Colon Road.
Undersheriff Keith Eichler says the sinkhole was small but the dirt underneath the surface was gone.
There was no immediate word what caused the road to open up but Eichler pointed out a portion of South Angola Road near Central Road was washed away a couple of years ago by underground water.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Office says until MDOT confirms the extent of the damage, the road is not safe for travel and will remain closed.
They’re asking people to do not attempt to travel in that area.
