Jon was born on May 1, 1949 to J.B. and June Elizabeth (Schultz) Washburn in Battle Creek, Michigan. He graduated from Union City High School with the Class of 1967. Jon later graduated from Michigan State University with an associate’s degree in agriculture in 1970.
Jon married Velma Lemanski on August 8, 1970 at St. Philip Roman Catholic Church in Battle Creek.
He started farming in 1964 and worked at Kellogg’s, Clark Equipment, and Post Cereal before becoming a full-time farmer in 1977.
Jon was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, loved Mopar cars, and was a history buff of WWII and the Vietnam War. He was unique, to the point, genuine, generous, and had a loving spirit under his gruff exterior. He could often be found driving around the countryside with a cigar in his mouth. Jon was humorous, always had a joke to share, and would often say “Just remember who loves ya.”
Surviving Jon are his wife, Velma; his children, Wendy (Paul Charles) Bussard of Dexter, Cindy (John Wojda) Washburn of Chicago, Bruce (Amber) Washburn of Union City and Bryan (Brenda) Washburn of Union City; his eight grandchildren; his brother Robert Washburn of Lakewood Ranch, FL; his sister-in-law Colleen Washburn of Canada; his one niece, three nephews, and several cousins; and his close friend who was like a brother to him, Bob Brewer of Athens.
Jon is preceded in death by his parents; his brother Jim Washburn; his sister-in-law Linda Washburn; his cousin Sally Logdson; and his son-in-law, Nick Bussard.
Memorial contributions can be made to Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church Building Fund, 8220 M-60, Union City, MI 49094.
