COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – While the Coldwater Board of Education took the official first step toward putting a $29 million bond resolution and 1.39 mill increase on the November ballot Monday night, they were warned by a Coldwater City Council candidate from the Fourth Ward that most of the over 1,200 voters in her ward were dead set against the proposal.
Alexia Rish said most of the Fourth Ward felt disconnected from the school board and that they are “frightened to death” of what’s going to happen to the old Franklin School property. Rish said the land should be given back to the fourth ward and not used for what she called “low income housing.”
The board passed a resolution approving the application for the preliminary qualification of bonds. Final action is expected to be taken during a special meeting July 24, 2017.
If voters in the Coldwater district say yes in November, Lakeland Elementary would be replaced by a new 4th and 5th grade building at the site of the current little league diamonds on Western Avenue. The funds would also be used for infrastructure needs in the district.
