COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Parma man was arraigned on Sunday in Branch County District Court on a pair of charges following a high speed pursuit in a stolen vehicle out of Tennessee.
40-year-old Lawrence Huffman is facing charges of Receiving and Concealing a Stolen Motor Vehicle and Third Degree Fleeing from a Police Officer.
According to Branch County court documents, Coldwater Police were notified Friday of a stolen vehicle near I-69 thanks to the high tech FLOCK camera system.
A Coldwater Police officer started to make a traffic stop at the Four Corners in downtown Coldwater but the vehicle drove off with speeds reaching over 100 miles an hour.
The pursuit eventually went onto I-69 and traveled north into Calhoun County. It ended when the vehicle drove down a dead end road and Huffman was apprehended.
The suspect claimed before he was arrested that he and girlfriend were buying the vehicle from the girlfriend’s mother for $300 a month for two years.
Not guilty pleas were entered on Huffman’s behalf during his arraignment and a cash or surety bond of $20,000 was set.
A probable cause hearing was set for September 19 with a preliminary exam scheduled for September 26.
It was the first of two high speed chases Coldwater Police were involved in over the weekend. A Coldwater woman was arrested following a pursuit on Saturday in which speeds got up to 70 mile an hour.
According to Branch County court documents, a Coldwater Police Officer saw a vehicle without a license plate and stopped it on West Pearl and Walnut Street. As the officer approached the car, it took off at a high rate of speed down West Pearl.
The vehicle got onto U.S. 12 and traveled west before crashing at the Storage Bin. 49-year-old Andrea Crocker was arraigned Sunday on a charge of third degree fleeing and eluding. A cash or surety bond of $5,000 was set and a not guilty plea was entered on her behalf.
A probable cause hearing will be held on September 19 with a preliminary exam set for September 25.
