BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – The Harper Creek Beavers compiled 348 yards on the ground as they defeated the Coldwater Cardinals 35-14 on Friday night in the Interstate 8 football opener for both teams.
Harper Creek has now won five straight football games against Coldwater and lead the all time series 40-23 with one tie.
All but one yard of Harper Creek’s total offense came on the ground.
Harper Creek’s Chase Nichols rushed for four touchdowns as he picked up 186 yards on 19 carries.
The Beavers built up a 20-0 lead in their Homecoming game. The Cardinals scored their first points against Harper Creek since 2021 when Dracyn Foster threw a 15 yard touchdown pass to Evan Lewis with 2:05 left in the third quarter which cut the Harper Creek lead to 20-7.
Nichols got his third touchdown with 9:13 left in the game which gave Harper Creek a 28-7 lead but the Cardinals refused to quit.
Foster found pay dirt from five yards out with 8:21 left to trim the Harper lead to 28-14.
But Nichols sealed the game as he tacked on his fourth TD of the night from 23 yards with 4:34 left.
Foster was the McDonald’s Player of the Game as he was 16 of 25 in the air for 187 yards. Evan Lewis had six receptions for 68 yards while Dayton Ennis had five catches for 64 yards and Bennett McDonald had four catches for 45 yards.
Naseem Taha rushed the ball 12 times for 57 yards.
The Cardinals are now 2-1. They will play at Jackson Northwest next Friday.
