COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Two men escaped injury on Friday afternoon when their 1966 Piper PA30 twin engine airplane had to land at the Branch County Memorial Airport with no landing gear.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Department says the plane was occupied by 38-year-old Jeffery M. Chatfield Coldwater and 45-year-old Robert H. Coles of Vicksburg.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Office, the Coldwater Fire Department and LifeCare Ambulance were dispatched to the airport just after 1:30 p.m. as the plane was having mechanical difficulties after it had been taken out for testing.
The pilots reported they could not lower the landing gear so they could land at the airport. The plane landed on its belly and off the runway.
There was minor damage to the propellers and possible damage to the under carriage of the plane.
The accident remains under investigation.
