BLACKMON TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – The Jackson Northwest Mounties scored two touchdowns in the final 6:08 as they rallied for a 24-20 victory over the Coldwater Cardinals on Friday night in the Mounties’ Homecoming game.
It was the third straight year Jackson Northwest has beaten Coldwater in football. It was a stinging loss for the Cardinals as they surrendered a ten point fourth quarter lead.
Coldwater opened the scoring on a 95 yard fumble return by Drew Ennis with 4:47 left in the first quarter.
Northwest got a one yard touchdown from Gabe Christner and a 34 yard field goal by Lucas Rotell in the second quarter as they took a 10-6 halftime lead.
The Mounties had a big edge in play in the first half as they ran 34 plays compared to 10 for the Cardinals.
Coldwater turned things around in the second half as they took a 13-10 lead with 3:56 left in the third quarter on a 12 yard pass from Dracyn Foster to Evan Lewis.
The Cardinals extended their lead to 20-10 with 9:26 left in the game on a five yard touchdown by McDonald’s Player of the Game Kayden Roby.
But Northwest took advantage of a number of Cardinals penalties and mistakes as they pulled the game out of the fire thanks a one yard touchdown by Jackson Beebe and Christner’s second one yard TD with 1:38 which proved to be the game winner.
Roby was Coldwater’s leading rusher as he finished with 76 yards on 12 carries while Naseem Taha had 42 yards on 10 carries. Lewis had four catches for 46 yards and a touchdown.
Northwest had the edge in total yards as they outgained the Cardinals 249-204.
Coldwater was assessed 10 penalties for 72 yards while Northwest was penalized seven times for 55 yards. The Cardinals also committed two turnovers compared to one for the Mounties.
Coldwater drops to 2-2 overall, 0-2 in the Interstate 8, and will host Parma Western next week.
Northwest is now 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the I-8.
