COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – After starting the high school football season with two straight wins, the Coldwater Cardinals have now lost three straight games.
They were never in Friday night’s game at Cardinal Field as they were manhandled by the Parma Western Panthers 49-7 in a Interstate 8 contest.
It was Purple Night for the football team which wrapped up the week-long efforts by Coldwater High School fall sports teams to raise funds for the ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital Cancer Center.
Janice Sharpley, who was diagnosed with cancer in April, had the honor of raising the American flag during the playing of the National Anthem.
As for the game, the Panthers scored on all of their first half possessions. Parma’s DJ Van Riper set the tone for the night with just two minutes gone in the first quarter as he returned a punt 61 yards for a touchdown.
Jayden Willis scored from two yards out to give Western a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.
Panthers quarterback Reed Myers then went to work as he threw three touchdown passes and ran for another in the second quarter as Western built a 42-0 halftime lead.
Myers threw his fourth TD pass of the game in the third quarter. Kendall Austin’s four-yard touchdown run for Coldwater with 1:27 left in the game spoiled the shutout for the Panthers.
Myers finished with 214 yards passing and four touchdowns. Austin had 51 yards rushing while McDonald’s Player of the Game Naseem Taha had 42 yards on the ground. Dracyn Foster passed for 74 yards with Dayton Ennis catching three passes for 47 yards.
Coldwater was called for seven penalties for 50 yards while Western was assessed four penalties for 45 yards. The Cardinals committed two turnovers compared to one for the Panthers.
Coldwater is now 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the Interstate 8. Western improves to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
