COLON, MI (WTVB) – The Colon Community Fire and Rescue Department has received a $2,000 grant from Michigan Gas Utilities to purchase a new gas detector.
The grant was part of the utility’s tenth annual Rewarding Responders Grant program.
The gas detector is designed to help alert firefighters and members of the public about the presence of harmful gases like carbon monoxide.
Colon Fire Chief Matt Overholt says, “The Rewarding Responders Grant means a lot to our department. This gas detector will help us get residents away from hazardous conditions and to a safe place. It also will help us provide accurate information to MGU if a natural gas leak is detected.”
The Rewarding Responders Grant program helps local police, fire and emergency medical services agencies purchase critical equipment or training to improve public safety.
Including this year’s grants, Michigan Gas Utilities has now awarded more than $85,000 through the program to help first responders in southern and western Michigan strengthen public safety in their communities.
