STEUBEN COUNTY, IN (WTVB) – A Colon man was killed Saturday night when his Freightliner semi-tractor crashed on the Indiana Toll Road in Steuben County.
The Indiana State Police say 61-year-old Stephen Robert Downs was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash which took place at about 6:45 p.m. near the 151 mile marker.
The semi was pulling a bulk liquid tanker trailer filled with milk.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the semi-tractor/trailer was initially traveling east in the left lane. For an unknown reason the semi-tractor ran off the edge of the road onto the soft shoulder. Downs attempted to correct, but lost control. Both the semi-tractor and trailer rolled over onto the driver’s side and came to rest in the median. Extensive damage was sustained to both the tractor and trailer.
Nearly 4,000 gallons of milk, along with approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled. Clean up of the wreckage debris and spillage required the closure of both eastbound and westbound lanes for nearly two hours.
The crash is still under investigation.
