Born on April 26, 1936, in Lansing, MI, to Marian R. Sullivan, Dean graduated from Holland High School in 1954. He served in the Army Security Agency in Germany from 1960 to 1963. Dean earned a B.A. and M.A. from Michigan State University, followed by an M.S.W. from the University of Michigan.
He married E. Tillie Treacher on August 28, 1965, in Coldwater, MI. A member of Lions International, Dean was dedicated to various organizations throughout Branch County, including Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Michigan State Advisory Council on Aging.
His love for community was evident in his passion for amateur history, and he cherished sending monthly packets filled with newspaper clippings about local sports, real estate, and community events to his son.
Dean enjoyed memorable trips to Ireland, Panama, Mexico, and many national parks in the U.S. A passionate sportsman, he played in golf and bowling leagues and continued playing softball until he was 70 years old.
Dean had a deep appreciation for nature and animals, particularly wolves and birds. He looked forward to his yearly nature calendars for Christmas. Whether attending high school sporting events or participating in community sports, Dean’s enthusiasm for local athletics brought him much joy.
Dean is survived by his children, Lisa Sullivan and Steve (Tracy) Sullivan. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Tillie Sullivan.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the kind-hearted people who kept an eye on Dean and were part of his late-in-life care. We will be forever grateful.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Big Brothers Big Sisters.
