STEUBEN CO, IN (WTVB) – Two kayakers had to be rescued after they were swept under water of the Pigeon River in western Steuben County on Saturday afternoon. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says the two got caught in a log jam the swift moving water.
They were identified as 54-year-old Dawn Desmond of Toledo, Ohio and a 14-year-old girl.
The D.N.R. says the conditions were dangerous for watercraft as the high water level caused swift currents and unpredictable hazards.
Both were able to reach the bank of the river and climb to safety where they called Steuben County 9-1-1.
A Conservation Officer and a Steuben County Sheriff’s Deputy found the kayakers.
The Angola Fire Department responded by air boat and they took the victims to a residence downstream where they were met by emergency personnel.
