UNDATED (WTVB) – Friday was originally supposed to be an off-day for high school sports around Branch County. However, a combination of inclement weather and poor field conditions Wednesday and Thursday brought about a few rescheduled baseball games.
Coldwater split a doubleheader at Battle Creek Lakeview that was rescheduled from Thursday. The Spartans took the opener 3-2, while the Cardinals took the nightcap 7-6. Mitchell Duda took the hard-luck complete game loss in game 1, giving up 7 hits with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts, while Cameron Barnes had a single and a double that accounted for half of Coldwater’s total hits for the game. Barnes also had 2 of the Cardinals’ 10 hits in game 2, while also getting the save in relief of starting and winning pitcher Zach Rigot. Coldwater ends its regular season with a record of 18-16.
Bronson swept visiting Athens in another twinbill that was postponed from Thursday, winning 12-6 and 5-1. Hudson Wotta and Colin Ransbottom were the winning pitchers; Wottta helped his own cause in the opener by going 2-for-4, while Luis DePaz was 2-for-2 and Ethan Cossairt was 2-for-5. Brett Sikorski had a monster day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double in the first game and 3-for-3 in the nightcap with a total of 3 RBIs. The Vikings improve to 26-7.
Union City played a single game against Mendon, originally scheduled for Wednesday, and defeated the Hornets 3-1. Josh Watson allowed only 3 hits with no walks and 5 strikeouts in taking the complete game win, while Blade Gordon went 3-for-3 with a double as the Chargers improve to 10-21.
Today’s high school sports schedule is all about the Bronson Polish Classic baseball and softball tournaments. Bronson, Union CIty, Comstock, and Parchment make up the baseball field, while Bronson, Union City, Buchanan, and Niles make up the softball field.
