COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A week after allowing 73 points at Hastings, the defense rose to the occasion for the Coldwater Cardinals on Friday night as a goal line stand preserved a 10-6 victory over the Marshall Redhawks on Senior Night at Cardinal Field.
Marshall opened the scoring in the first quarter but a two point conversion attempt failed and that miss would come back to haunt the Red Hawks later in the game.
Marshall took a 6-0 lead into the half but things changed quickly early in the third quarter when Dracyn Foster hooked up with Dayton Ennis on a 50-yard touchdown pass.
The extra point by Manuel Hernandez gave Coldwater a 7-6 lead. Hernandez gave the Cardinals some insurance with a 26-yard field goal in the fourth quarter which put Coldwater ahead 10-6.
That forced Marshall to score a touchdown in order to pull out the victory but with just over a minute left, the Coldwater defense stopped Marshall’s Akin Olapade at the two yard line on fourth down.
Coldwater won despite being outgained in total yards 314-185. Coldwater only managed 17 yards on the ground.
Foster was 12 of 28 in the air for 157 yards and one touchdown. Ennis had four catches for 77 yards. Bennett McDonald led the defense with 17 tackles.
Olapade finished with 40 carries for 159 yards.
Coldwater closes the season at 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the Interstate 8.
