COLDWATER, MI (WTVB)- The Branch County Sheriff’s Office says their first jail overcrowding emergency of the year ended Wednesday.
The Sheriff’s Office reports that the general jail population has been dropping during the week. It reached 138 Wednesday afternoon.
They say the courts were then notified and took quick action to make a minimum number of sentence reductions which brought the jail count down to 132. That ended the nearly week long overcrowding emergency.
The jail population dropped even further to 128 on Thursday morning. The jail has a rated capacity of 142 prisoners.
Sheriff John Pollack told the Branch County Board of Commissioners last Thursday that the general population at that time was 149, which included 24 females. They had 155 prisoners the day before.
