COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Just over three months after Republic Services opened a transfer station on Treat Avenue near Garfield Road in Coldwater, the city was informed by Republic on Tuesday that the transfer station will be closing at the end of the business day on Saturday, December 19.
In a statement posted on the city’s website, officials say Republic Services has not provided any further information at this time.
The news comes as the City of Battle Creek is looking to change their waste hauler services from Waste Management to Republic Services. The Battle Creek Enquirer reports that Battle Creek residents have complained about pickup delays over the last several months. Waste Management has been plagued by staff shortages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Battle Creek City Commission is scheduled to make a decision next Tuesday.
Republic Waste Services used to operate the Quincy transfer station before it closed on September 3, 2020. Republic began operating the transfer station in Coldwater two days later.
The Quincy Village Council approved a request from Village Manager Brittany Butler in June to close the 37 acre transfer station because it only generated about $3,000 in revenue for the village over the last couple of years. She said at the time it was not enough money to cover their costs. The land was later sold by the village.
