QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – Kim Hemker from the Branch County Coalition Against Domestic Violence presented a plan during a Quincy School Board work session Monday night that she feels will move the community forward following recent sexual assault allegations against a former teacher.
Hemker says they want to make a cultural shift. She adds everybody has to get involved.
The 3A plan is called Be Aware, Accept Responsibility and Act Appropriately.
Hemker says it is broken down into three different levels of action. Immediate action during this school year would include a five member multidisciplinary team that would include coalition counselors and crisis interventionists. They would be made available to past and present students at the Quincy Village office starting next Tuesday. Students, parents or community members would be able to discuss what has gone on with them and a counselor would be available.
There would also be Department of Health and Human Services mandatory reporting training for all school staff. In addition, there would be two training sessions for board members and other administrators of the coalition’s Darkness to Light program which shows how they can help children stay safe from sexual predators.
Other immediate action would include student information sessions along with parenting education and feedback.
