COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The total cost of this years Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day went up by over $6,000 compared to 2023 while the number of participants and the amount of materials collected dropped.
The City of Coldwater and the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities’ held the annual event on September 28 at the Branch County Fairgrounds.
Event coordinator Chad Rakocy told the Coldwater B.P.U. Board of Directors on Wednesday evening a total of 17,786 pounds of household hazardous waste was collected this year from 216 participants.
The numbers were down compared to 2023 when 22,198 pounds was collected from 252 participants.
The total cost for this year’s collection came in at just under $26,000.
Biz Aid LLC – Recycling once again offered electronic recycling after they joined the city and the CBPU last year as a partner. Over 2,000 pounds of e-waste was collected compared to over 6,000 pounds in the first year.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day was created to help keep drinking water and local natural resources safe from contamination.
Participating this year were the cities of Coldwater and Bronson, as well as the Village of Quincy and the Townships of Algansee, Bethel, Bronson, Butler, Coldwater, Girard, Kinderhook, Ovid and Quincy.
