PORTAGE, MI (WTVB) – Two big quarters helped lift Portage Central to a 56-43 win over Coldwater Saturday afternoon.
The Mustangs outscored the Cardinals 19-8 in the first quarter, but Coldwater had a 15-6 edge in the second to cut halftime lead to 25-23. Coldwater briefly led early in the second half, but Portage Central put the game away with a 21-11 third quarter.
Gavin Taylor led the Cardinals with a game-high 15 points. Niko Downs had 7 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals, while Ayden Dirschell had 7 points, 8 boards, and 5 assists.
Coldwater’s record drops to 3-3. They will host Gull Lake Tuesday night.
Three players scored in double digits for Portage Central, who improved to 3-1 on the season: Ben Johnson had 13 points, Payton Porter scored 12, and Charlie Jilek added 11.

Coldwater lost the JV game 52-34. Evan Lewis led the Cardinals with 9 points.
The Cardinal freshmen overcame a 15-point deficit to beat the Mustangs 42-40. Trevor Mitchell knocked down 11 points, and Royale Fleming added 10.
