COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – While the City of Bronson awaits final approval from the state legislature on Department of Natural Resources Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund funding for their proposed Rail Trail Project, the City of Coldwater is also awaiting word on monies to assist renovations at Rotary Park.
Bronson officials announced last week they have been recommended for a state grant of over $387,000. The project will include construction of a new non-motorized trail along the former Northeastern Rail Line that runs through the northern portion of the City from Albers Road to Cronkhite Vault Services Incorporated on Industrial Avenue.
The City of Coldwater should be receiving $400,000 for Phase 2 of their project, which includes a new picnic pavilion and boardwalks. The city will match the state grant to cover the estimated total cost of the $700,000 Phase 2 project.
Contracts for Phase One of the project have already been awarded to Parrish Excavating of Quincy for just over $1.7 million. The primary part of Phase One is the installation of a new concrete boat, launch along with public restrooms, parking areas, a boat wash and the demolition of a building.
Money for that project is coming from the City’s accumulated state cannabis tax revenues, which are held in the City’s Capital Improvement Fund. The fund is separate from the City’s General Fund and is used for various infrastructure projects as property is developed.
The fund currently has just over $1 million in cannabis tax revenues and Coldwater City Manager Keith Baker says another $650,000 to $750,000 in additional cannabis tax revenues is anticipated from the State of Michigan in March.
