READING, MI (WTVB) – The Chief of Police for Reading, Michigan has been was arrested and faces domestic violence charges after an alleged assault on his girlfriend.
WILX-TV reports that at midnight Sunday, Dec. 22, Michigan State Police troopers were sent to a home on Ridge Drive in Hillsdale County’s Reading Township for reports of an assault. There, police determined a 48-year-old Reading man had assaulted his romantic partner, a 41-year-old Reading woman.
Hillsdale County officials later identified the suspect as Eric Stolberg, the Chief of Police for Reading. He was arrested and taken to the Hillsdale County Jail, where he posted bond.
Hillsdale County Prosecutor Neal Brady told the TV station, “The case will be referred to the Attorney General’s Office for review. Due to the apparent conflict of interest that arises when a police officer is accused of committing a crime, the local prosecuting agency generally asks for review by the Attorney General. That is the case here. This process will begin directly after Christmas. The AG can take the case themselves or assign it to a special prosecutor, usually from a neighboring county that does not have a conflict. After it is assigned or accepted by the AG, they will determine what, if any, charges are authorized and how the case is to proceed.”
