Albert “Big Al” R. Nelson, 92, of Coldwater passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at Lake House in Coldwater.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no services at this time.
All arrangements are being cared for by Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater.
Al was born January 28, 1932, to Ragner and Hazel (Griffith) Nelson. He was a graduate from Hope College. Al later married Jean H. (Locke) June 25, 1955, in Lansing, MI.
He worked many jobs including JC Penny, Federal Mogul, Holbrook Patterson, Acme Belt, Jay’s Olds and as the Mayor of Coldwater from 1981-1983.
Al was a member of the First Baptist Church in Coldwater, the Noon Rotary Club where he received the Paul Harris Award, the Coldwater City Council, and the Jaycees. Al enjoyed playing shuffleboard, cards and cribbage. In his free time, he would often travel, fish, or spend time with his friends and family.
Al was very sociable, being involved in many groups, a great leader that sat upon many boards and he even taught Sunday School. Most of all Al loved to spend time with his family.
Al is survived by his children Mark (Norma Ruggless) Nelson; Julie (Sam) Griffin; David (Molly) Nelson; Brian (Lauri) Nelson; his grandchildren, Maggie (Tom) Shumate; Jesse Griffin; Nicole (Joe) Scogin; Sarah Griffin; Katrina (Jon) Peacock; Cole Nelson; Gabe Nelson; his 4 great grandchildren; and his sister-in-law Rita Locke.
Al is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Jean Nelson; his brother Big Fred Nelson; sister-in-law MaryAnn Nelson; and his brother-in-law Richard Locke.
