LANSING, MI (WTVB) – A state House committee has approved a pair of bills to change the upcoming minimum wage hike and paid sick time law.
Both bills will soon be up for a vote in the full House which is now controlled by Republicans.
The bills will keep tipped wages at a maximum of 38 percent of the minimum wage. Small businesses would also be exempt from providing paid sick time.
35th District Republican State Representative Jennifer Wortz is among those backing the bills.
She said in a statement released House Republicans, “The new Republican majority’s immediate action on this issue will save businesses in my district from disaster. The changes to the Earned Sick Time Act that went unaddressed by the Democrat-controlled Legislature last term would cause untold harm to small business owners and workers throughout the state, and the worst effects would be felt by rural communities like those I represent. I wholeheartedly support our plan to fix this wage crisis and am encouraged by how fast we’re acting to provide a real solution.”
Eventually, the House and the Democratic controlled Senate have to come together on legislation that would get signed by Governor Whitmer. Senate Democrats have their own bills pending.
