COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinals opened Interstate 8 high school baseball play Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of Marshall, winning by scores of 2-0 and 10-0. Kameron Miller and Cameron Barnes combined on a three hit shutout in the opener. Miller struck out seven as he went the first six innings to get the win. Barnes earned the save with a scoreless seventh. Andrew Richar had an RBI single for Coldwater.
The Cardinals romped in the nightcap thanks to a six run second and a four run third. McDonald’s Player of the Game Mitchell Duda tossed a three hitter to get the win. Bryce Barringer had two hits and two RBI’s. Barnes also had two hits. With the doubleheader sweep, the Cardinals are now 6-3.
Marshall swept the junior varsity doubleheader 9-6 and 11-10.
Also in baseball, after building a six run lead on Tuesday night, the Union City Chargers hung on to defeat Athens 7-6 in the completion of a suspended game. Tobey Austin and Blade Gordon both had two hits for the Chargers. Riley Rivard and Isaac Hunt both had two RBI’s. Larson Kever was the winning pitcher. It was the second game of a doubleheader. Athens won the opening game on Tuesday 5-3 in eight innings.
In girls softball, the Coldwater Lady Cardinals opened their Interstate 8 conference scheduled with a doubleheader sweep of Marshall by scores of 11-0 and 13-2. Winning pitchers Tyler Schied and Darlene Horn both tossed one hitters. Drue Mullin homered in the first game while Schied had three RBI’s. Mullin, Schied and Samantha Rodesiler all had two hits.
Jamie Wellet drove in three runs in the nightcap while Avery Milnes had two RBI’s. Wellet, Mullin and Schied all had two hits in the second game. With the sweep, Coldwater improves to 4-1.
The Coldwater JV team swept a doubleheader at Marshall by scores of 15-0 and 10-2. Autumn Sunderland had an inside the park home run in the opener. Bailey Burkhardt had three hits in the second game. Emma Stanley and Lindsey Monks were the winning pitchers.
