LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Figures released on Thursday by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget showed Branch County’s unemployment rate in December went up to 4-point-7 percent which was a increase from the November rate of four-point-three percent.
It was also a half percent higher than the October jobless rate.
Branch County had the 14th lowest unemployment rate among Michigan’s 83 counties.
Not seasonally adjusted unemployment rates advanced in 15 of Michigan’s 17 labor market areas over the month.
Wayne Rourke from the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics said, “Michigan regional unemployment gains were primarily driven by employment reductions across the labor market areas over the month. Preliminary annual average regional jobless rates also rose over the year.”
Unemployment rates climbed in neighboring counties during December. St. Joseph County’s rate was at five percent while Hillsdale County’s unemployment rate went up to five-point-five percent with the jobless rate in Calhoun County at five-point-eight percent.
Michigan’s December unemployment rate was at five percent after starting 2024 at four percent which ended three straight years of declines.
December unemployment rates around Michigan ranged from 3-point-3 percent in Livingston County to 17-point-nine percent in Mackinaw County.
