He was born March 12, 1930, in Clay County, Arkansas.
Ben grew up on a farm where he learned the value of hard work. He attended the Church of Christ in Greenway, AK when he was a small boy. The value of hard work and a belief in God shaped his future.
Ben graduated high school from a small country school in Greenway, Clay County, Arkansas. He played pitcher on a semi-pro baseball team that traveled from town to town. He served 18 months in the Air Force and was discharged honorably on a Family Farm Hardship Deferment.
Bennie moved to Detroit, MI to work in the Car industry. There he met his wife of 62 years, Carol. They had five children. While living in the Detroit area, his family attended the Garden City Church of Christ. The call of God reached his heart, and he responded by traveling to Panama with his family as a missionary. He worked with many congregations of the Church of Christ in the countryside.
When he returned to the States, he preached in Georgia and South Carolina.
He and his family eventually moved to Coldwater in 1967 to work with the Coldwater Church of Christ. Coldwater was their home for 45 years. The Church flourished while he was in the pulpit, preaching the word of God without any reservation. Membership grew rapidly and many improvements to the facility were accomplished during his time as the preacher. He preached there for over twenty years during different times.
He also preached at the Steuben County Church of Christ for 14 years and the Stockbridge Church of Christ for 3 years. He was a servant of Jesus Christ who believed wholeheartedly in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”.
Ben also worked at the Acorn Window Company and retired after 14 years. During those 14 years, he was often preaching. Ben was a resourceful man who planted gardens and, with his wife, Carol, canned vegetables for their family. Wherever he could save or earn money, he did.
Bennie was an avid hunter, golfer, and pool player, who played baseball, cards, and checkers. He enjoyed watching golf, baseball, and football.
Ben is survived by his daughter Donna (Randy) Finley of Quincy; three sons, Mark (Tammi) Sherfield of Gaylord, David (Loretta) Sherfield of Coldwater and Michael (Kelli) Sherfield of Fishers, IN; 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol, daughter Linda, father Benjamin, mother Zell, brother Marvin, and two great grandsons.
Memorials may be directed to Camp Indogan Christian Youth Camp.
