UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Chargers punched their ticket for Kalamazoo’s Wings Event Center and the M.H.S.A.A. Division Four Team Wrestling quarterfinals on Thursday night.
The ninth-ranked Chargers defeated Mendon 72-6 in the semifinals and Springport 61-9 in the finals to win a team regional championship on their home mat.
Union City Head Coach Jason Counterman said they had to overcome some adversity.
The Chargers got pins in the regional final against Springport from Blayne Crance (113), Mason Hawthorne (138), Kelub Miller (144), Aidan Taylor (150) and Carson Danke (190). Decision winners were Kaden Russell (120), Mitchell Graham (126), Gabe Mowry (132) and John Olmstead (175). Winning on voids were Montana Connell (157), William Thompson (215) and Luke Cronkright (285).
Springport advanced to the regional finals after they defeated Saranac 35-34.
Union City won seven of their matches against Mendon on voids. Logan Mears at 138 and Taylor recorded milestone wins against the Hornets as they each collected their 150th career victories.

Crance won on a decision, Russell won on a technical fall and Mears won on a decision. Pins were scored by Graham, Taylor, Danke and Cronkright.
The Chargers advance to the M.H.S.A.A. D4 quarterfinals next Friday at noon at the Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo. Their opponent will be determined on Sunday when the eight teams are seeded.
