COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed the first influenza-associated pediatric deaths of the 2024-2025 flu season in Michigan.
The children were from Wayne and Genesee counties and both had contracted seasonal influenza A, H1N1.
State and local health officials are urging all residents to get vaccinated for protection against the flu. It is not too late in the flu season to protect yourself, and your loved ones, against the flu.
Michigan is currently experiencing a very high rate of influenza which puts residents of all ages at risk. Pediatric flu vaccine coverage in Michigan is at 15-point-one percent according to the Michigan Care Improvement Registry, which is the lowest in recent seasons.
The Centers for Disease Control says cases of flu are at their highest level in over 15 years.
Seasonal flu viruses can be detected year-round; however, seasonal flu activity often begins as early as October and November and can continue to occur as late as May.
If you want a flu shot at the Coldwater office of the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency, immunization clinics are held on Mondays.
