UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Union City Superintendent Chris Katz reported the findings of a Facilities Steering Committee during the district’s School Board meeting on Monday night.
The committee made up of community members has been looking into the future of the district’s buildings over the last several months.
Katz said the committee felt it was time to close the middle school and renovate the elementary and high school buildings.
He said they are currently looking at a bonding request of between $25 and $30 million that would go before district voters in August.
Katz said this is still a work in progress.
Options were explored last year about the possible consolidating of buildings thanks to a study that was conducted after the district received a state grant.
The district’s elementary school was built in 1952 while Union City High School was constructed in 1960 and Union City Middle School was built in 1975.
The study found the middle school building had the most problems.
The Union City School Board has to approve the language in the bonding proposal by May 14 in order for it to get on the August 5 ballot.
