Charlotte Jean Smith, 82, of Union City, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 17, 2020 at Glenn Arbor Hospice Residence in Battle Creek.
Following cremation, she will be memorialized at a later date, with private burial at North Sherwood Cemetery. The family is being served by Lighthouse Funeral & Cremation of Union City.
Char was born September 11, 1938 in Charlotte, Michigan to Garland and Marvel (Bowen) Grinage. She attended Hastings High School, a member of the Class of 1956. Char was married to Thomas Vaccaro and later to John Smith, but both unions ended in divorce. Char worked as a waitress for 25 years in Battle Creek, Union City and Coldwater, as well as Kalkaska, where she owned the Country Boy Bar. In later years she worked at the B Drive Meijer in Battle Creek. Char enjoyed spending time with family, especially grand- and great-grandchildren. She liked attending her annual family reunions. She also enjoyed playing cards, watching TV, going to yard sales, listening to music, gardening, cooking and going out for lunch and on outings with her friends. She attended the Union City Wesleyan Church.
Survivors include Char’s children, Greg (Gloria) Vaccaro of Battle Creek, Anthony (Lana) Vaccaro of Battle Creek, Lisa (Scott) Foley of Battle Creek, Brian (Lori) Vaccaro of Union City, Jeffery (Dodie) Vaccaro of Bronson and Ralph (Marie) Smith of Battle Creek; many grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and her brother, William “Bill” (Sheila) Grinage of Nashville, MI.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Clark (1997); a son, Thomas Vaccaro, Jr. (2017); and her sister, Marsha Knapp.
