COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Dylan Targgart’s rebound basket with 1:18 left put Coldwater ahead for good and the Cardinals went on to eliminate arch rival Sturgis 45-40 in the opening round of Class A Boys Basketball districts in Coldwater Monday night.
The Cardinals let an 11 point slip away as Sturgis sophomore Zach Chapman erupted for 13 of his 15 points in the final quarter which helped Sturgis take a 40-37 lead. But Coldwater recovered and scored the final eight points of the game as they won their first post season game since 2010.
Our McDonald’s Players of the Game were Gage McGuire and Brady Beckhusen. McGuire had 16 points and nine rebounds while Targgart had 13 points and Beckhusen had eight points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Coldwater advances to play Battle Creek Central Wednesday night.
Battle Creek Lakeview advanced to the first semifinal on Wednesday night with a 59-45 win over Kalamazoo Loy Norrix. The Spartans will face Gull Lake in the semifinals at 6:00 p.m., with the Coldwater-Battle Creek Central game to follow around 7:30 p.m.
Class C at Jonesville
Quincy 63, Jonesville 53
Quincy opened the Class C districts at Jonesville by knocking out the host Comets 63-53. Nathan Karney erupted for 37 points Monday night. He also had five assists and five rebounds. William Dunn chipped with nine points and 13 rebounds while Ryan Gibson had seven points. Big Eight Conference Champion Quincy will play Homer on Wednesday at 5:30 in Jonesville. The Orioles are 17-4 now on the season.
Union City 48, Reading 45
Union City advanced to the semifinals at the Class C districts at Jonesville as they rallied from a 14 point second half deficit to defeat Reading 48-45. The Chargers trailed 36-22 entering the final quarter before they began their big comeback. Larson Kever led Union City with 17 points. The Chargers are now 9-12. They will face Bronson in the Jonesville semifinals on Wednesday.
Class D Districts at Climax-Scots
Climax-Scots 67, Tekonsha 64
Tekonsha’s season came to an end on Monday as they lost to the host school in the Class D districts at Climax-Scots 67-64. The Indians finished 8-13. Andy Galliers led Tekonsha with 24 points and 11 rebounds while Anthony Payne had 18 points.
