BROWN COUNTY, TX (WTVB) – An alleged non-complaint registered sex offender from Angola is now facing federal charges under the federal Sex Offender and Notification law known as the Adam Walsh Act.
26-year-old Samuel Brett Smith was a fugitive from Steuben County for nearly eight weeks before he was captured and later placed into federal custody in Brown County, Texas by the U.S. Marshals Service.
A warrant for Smith’s arrest came after a nearly three month joint investigation with the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals that spanned from Indiana to Texas.
The investigation started in December when the Sheriff’s Office was informed that Smith allegedly moved from his last registered address and failed to notify them.
Smith was being held pending an initial appearance before the United States magistrate judge in Abilene, Texas.
