COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – If a proposed sale of the property that used to be the site of the Franklin Educational Facility falls through, the Coldwater Community School District may have a couple of alternate plans available.
Superintendent Terry Boguth tells the Coldwater Plan Commission Monday night the old school building needs to be demolished and it would cost the district $200,000.
She said the property is not big enough for a proposed fourth and fifth grade building.
Boguth indicated two other interested parties have contacted the district about the property even though it has not been advertised for sale.
One is the American Arab Association. According to Boguth, they are looking at using it for a weekend school since the Tibbits Opera House is not available for classes on some weekends.
Boguth said they have also had an inquiry from a church.
She added the district could use it for a bus garage but a final decision has not been.
The Coldwater Plan Commission recommended on a 5-4 vote Monday night that the City Council deny a rezoning request from the NRP Group.
The Cleveland area development group asked that over nine acres be rezoned from A-1 One Family Residential to A-3 Multi Family Residential for a proposed housing development.
But the request has been met with strong opposition from nearby residents. In addition, nearly 500 petition signatures against the rezoning have been submitted from all over Coldwater.
