BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – For the first time this season, the Coldwater varsity boys basketball team has dropped back-to-back games. Battle Creek Pennfield built a 41-27 halftime lead and went on to defeat the Cardinals 87-80 on Tuesday night at Pennfield. The offensive explosion by Pennfield was a far cry from January 10 when the Cardinals defeated them 65-44.
McDonald’s Player of the Game Gage McGuire had a game high 33 points and grabbed 18 rebounds for the Cardinals while Dylan Targgart had 13 points and Brady Beckhusen had 10 points. Deveaire Todd led four Panthers in double figures with 29 points.
The loss dropped Coldwater into a second place tie in the Interstate 8. Parma Western moved into first place with a 64-45 win over Marshall. Coldwater is now 12-4 overall and 8-3 in the Interstate 8.
Pennfield also won the JV game 40-37. The Cardinals were led by Ryan Murphy with 14 points. Coldwater won the freshman game 50-47.
Quincy used a second half rally as they edged out Union City 54-52. The Orioles were sparked by Ryan Gibson’s fourth quarter, where he hit two key 3-pointers, then had a steal that led to an old-fashioned 3-point play. The Orioles were led by Nathan Karney with 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Gibson had 11 points, seven rebounds. Drew Deaton had 10 points and William Dunn had 12 rebounds. Bryce Ruhl had 4 points and 6 rebounds. Caleb McCavit had 6 points and 4 rebounds to contribute to the win.
Elijah Harris led Union City with 18 points.
Quincy is now 12-4 overall and 9-1 in the Big Eight..The Chargers drop to 6-10 overall and 2-8 in the conference.
Quincy also won the J.V. game 53-38.
Jackson Christian topped Tekonsha 80-48. Calvin Blue had 17 points for the Indians as their record dropped to 7-10.

Coldwater scored the first five points of the second half to open up a 24-13 lead only to see the visiting Pennfield Panthers outscore their hosts 26-11 over the final 13 minutes to come away with a 39-35 conference win.
Tyler Scheid had a huge night for the Cardinals with eight points, 16 rebounds and four steals. Malorie Rzepka just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Carlee Crabtree led the Cardinals in scoring with 11 points.
The loss drops Coldwater to 13-4 overall and 7-4 in conference play. The Cardinals host Harper Creek on Friday night.
The Coldwater JV Lady Cards improved to 8-10 as they defeated Pennfield 50-25. Autumn Sunderland had 15 points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists while Jayda Kelly had 12 points and eight rebounds.
Pennfield won the freshman game 36-29. Taylor Wilber and Kaity Meyers both scored 12 points for Coldwater. Meyers also had eight rebounds.
The Quincy Orioles hung tough with state-ranked Centreville but lost to the Bulldogs 39-32. Hannah Economou led the Orioles with eight points while Katie Rathbun had 10 rebounds and Cailyn Cook had eight assists. The Orioles are now 7-10.

The Vikings dropped to 12-5. Adyson Lasky led the Vikings with 14 points.
