BRONSON,MI (WTVB) – An early Tuesday morning attempted traffic stop led to a high speed chase in Bronson.
At approximately 12:20 a.m. a Bronson police officer attempted to stop vehicle for traveling through the city at speeds believed to bein excess 70 miles an hour.
The driver then fled westbound on West Chicago Street with the pursuit speeds reaching 110 mph. The driver was then observed driving on the wrong side of the road on several occasions and at one point running a vehicle off the roadway.
The driver then stopped and turned his pickup truck around and drove toward the officer’s patrol car while the officer was still inside. He then ran his vehicle into the patrol car and attempted to push it backwards.
After making several attempts the driver backed up and drove around the patrol car and headed eastbound on US 12 toward the Bronson city limits.
Once in the city the suspect drove into the parking lot of the Shell gas station where officer Travis Ferry and deputies from the Branch County Sheriff’s Department were able to pin their vehicles against the suspect vehicle and removed him and placed him into custody.
Toxicology tests are pending, but alcohol and/or drugs are believed to be a factor.
Damage was done to multiple patrol cars during the pursuit. The suspect, identified as Scott Laverne-Lester Metcalf, was lodged at the Branch County Jail on preliminary charges two counts of assault on a police officer and fleeing. Additional charges could be filed pending results of toxicology report.
