DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – Mike Ilitch, the owner of the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers, has died at the age of 87. Ilitch and his wife founded the Little Caesars Pizza empire in suburban Detroit in 1959 and he paid a reported $8 million in 1982 to purchase the Red Wings, who won the Stanley Cup four times under his ownership. Ilitch paid $85 million for the Tigers in 1992 and the team reached the World Series twice.
