ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) – One person was killed and another was injured Thursday morning when a fire broke out at a home on Jimmerson Lake in Steuben County.
The fatal victim has been identified by Steuben County Chief Deputy Coroner Rodney Snyder as 94-year-old Gene Mitchell. The cause of death is being listed as smoke inhalation and severe thermal burns and that the manner of death will listed as accidental.
The injured person was a female. She was taken to a local hospital. Officials say no further information will be released on her due to HIPAA regulations.
Angola Fire Department Public Information Officer T.R. Hagerty says the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s office but at this time it appears the fire was accidental.
The fire was reported at about 5:45am and it took firefighters over an hour to get the flames under control.
The fire was burning through the roof when they arrived.
Three Steuben County fire departments were called in to battle the blaze.
