COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A new exhibit highlighting the culture and history of Coldwater’s Yemeni-American population will open Saturday during Coldwater’s Annual Ice Fest. The exhibit includes interactive displays, videos, and other information on both Yemen and Yemeni-Americans.
According to project director Tamara Apmann, the goal of the exhibit is to bridge barriers and promote cross-cultural understanding between the Yemeni and non-Arab people of Coldwater. Through partnerships with Aira of Coldwater and the Arab American Society of Coldwater, Tibbits was able to produce the exhibit, which is on display at the opera house through the end of May 2017.
Members of the Tibbits Opera Foundation Board of Directors and others from the communty got their first look at the exhibit this past Thursday at the Tibbits Annual Meeting.
The exhibit was funded through a Michigan Humanities Council Heritage Grant. The state-wide grant program supports projects that help the people of Michigan understand cultural differences by sharing local stories of race, cultural history and personal identity.
