UNION CITY, MI (WTVB)- Union City Schools are looking to give their buildings and facilities a complete face lift with a bond issue in August. UC recently received a state grant for $23.6 million to consolidate three buildings into two. That coupled with an increase in tax rolls from $202 million to $330 million, thanks in large part to the DTE solar farm.
Superintendent Chris Katz, says to do the proposed renovations on a bond alone would have been approximately 7 mil, but with the increased tax roll and the grant it will lower the bond to 1 mil. That will come to about $58 dollars per year for tax payers for what Katz says will practically be new buildings.
Katz says reports of needing the bond to secure the grant are unfounded, he says the only string attached to the grant was needing to consolidate from three buildings down to two.
In addition to building improvements, they are also looking to add LED lights and replacing the restrooms for visitors at the football stadium, as well as rebuilding the track at the stadium.
Funds would also pave the way for construction of a new softball field near the baseball field .
