QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – Rain, sunshine, and more rain couldn’t stop the action Monday at the Big 8 Middle School Track Invitational, hosted by the Quincy Orioles.
Despite the slick conditions on the track, athletes from across the conference showed resilience and determination in a meet filled with standout performances and strong sportsmanship.
For many young athletes, including those from Quincy, this meet was more than just about placing — it was a key opportunity to qualify for the upcoming regional meet.
Quincy had several strong performances for the night. The Invite medaled first thru third places. Some of the Orioles top performers on the boys’ side were DJ Poore first in the 70 and third in the 100m, Ben Romine second in the 200m, Nathan Dunn third in the mile and second in the two mile, Dylan Musser second in 55H, second in 200H and third in long jump, Anderson Suever third in pole vault. The 4×200 relay team of K. Marquart, C. Brewer, R. House, and B. Romine took first. The boys took first in the Invite with a team score of 139.5 points!!
Medalists for the Lady Orioles were Riley Myers second in the 70m, third in the 100m, and first in long jump; Bailey Porter second in the 400m, Alexis Reif second in the mile, Gabby Norris third in the shot put, Cambreiah Cannon third in the high jump, Mackenzie Sattison second in pole vault.
The girls’ relay teams had a very successful night. The 4×200 team of A. Deal, M. Shilling, B. Porter, and G. Hemker took third. The 4×400 relay team of B. Porter, L. Tappenden, G. Hemker, and M. Sattison also took third. The girls took third overall for the night.
After the final event of the night, the Orioles ran the debut of the Banana Relay — a lighthearted and wildly entertaining 4×100 meter relay. In this crowd-pleasing finale, each team consisted of three student-athletes, one coach, and a banana for the relay baton. After crossing the finish line, one relay team member had to eat the banana for the team’s time to count. Coaches and spectators alike cheered on the runners — and the banana eaters!!
The MS Track and Field Team heads to Concord for Regionals May 22. This is a semi-new event for Middle School teams.
